William Tepper (born 1948 in The Bronx) was a 21-year-old writer-director who had recently graduated from the U.C.L.A. Film School when he convinced his agent at Creative Management Associates to get him interviewed by writer-director Jack Nicholson, who was casting a movie based on Jeremy Larner's 1964 novel Drive, He Said (1971) that had a college basketball motif. Though he had little professional acting experience, Nicholson was impressed by his reading.
