Peter Howell was born to Owen, a solicitor, and his wife Nora, nee Mally, on 25 October 1919. He attended Winchester College and Christ Church college, Oxford but left his study course when he was called up in 1939. Invalided out of the service in 1943 he became interested in acting through his sister Gillian, who was training at RADA, and he joined the Old Vic at the New theatre, London.
