He served in the Special Services during World War II, and then was a pianist and arranger for dance orchestras, and composer, conductor and accompanist to Doris Day, Patti Page, and Arthur Prysock. Joining ASCAP in 1956, his chief musical collaborators included Bob Hilliard and Earl Shuman.
