Matthew Lewis Pyken was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Eugene Pyken, a fundraiser, and Rhoda Singer Pyken, a teacher. He's the eldest of three children - youngest sister Jennifer is a prominent music supervisor, and middle sister, Julie, is a well-known Los Angeles artist and graphic designer. When he was nine, the family moved to Van Nuys, California, where he attended Grant High School, then Claremont McKenna College, where he received a degree in Literature and Political Science.
