Laffit Pincay Jr. retired in April 2003 as horse racing's all-time winningest jockey until that time, with 9,530 victories. He was surpassed in 2006 by Russell Baze, who as of March 2014 has over 12,208 wins.

With his 8,834th win at Hollywood Park in California on December 10, 1999, he surpassed jockey legend William Shoemaker (popularly known as Bill Shoemaker or "The Shoe"), thereby setting (at that time) a new career jockey victory record, while on board "Irish Nip," the horse that won him his record 8,834th riding win.
