Jean D. Sewell, the third eldest of five daughters and one son was born to Mattie Horner Dorsey and John Larvell Dorsey in Chicago, Ill., on July 14, 1920.

Jean attended Dusable in Chicago and went on to study voice with Madame Desanctus. This was the beginning of her theatrical career in the world of entertainment.
