Biography
Daniel is an award-winning Canadian actor and writer for the stage and screen. Most notably, he recently starred as Holloman in the feature 'Lawrence & Holloman (2013)', which he co-wrote with director Matthew Kowalchuk, based on the play by Morris Panych, for which he won "Best Actor in a Comedy" at the Victoria Texas IFF and was nominated for a 'Leo Award (2014)' for "Best Lead Actor in a Feature Film". Daniel also starred in the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway production of "Any Night", which he co-wrote and performed with Medina Hahn. Prior to its Off-Broadway production, "Any Night" had been published by Playwrights Canada Press, won Outstanding New Play at Toronto's Summerworks Festival, five awards in Toronto Now including Outstanding Performance, and was hailed among the "Best Productions of the Year" in Toronto and Vancouver; Daniel is currently developing the feature film version of "Any Night", which won the CFF Super Channel Screenplay Award. Also of note, Daniel co-wrote/performed the stage play "Tuesdays & Sundays", which toured across Canada and internationally where it was listed as one of the "Best Shows of the Year" in New York, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Toronto; was published twice; broadcast as a radio play on CBC and BBC (starring David Tennant); and was optioned as a feature film by Slate Films of London UK and Clarity Films in Canada.
So far in his career, Daniel has been nominated a 'Leo Award (2014)', four Jessie Richardson Awards for "Outstanding Actor", garnered a VTXIFF Jury Award, two Sterling Awards for acting and writing, and one of his mentors Daniel MacIvor bestowed upon him and his colleague Medina Hahn the protégé portion of the $100,000 "Siminovitch Prize", Canada's most prestigious theatre award. On screen, Daniel has had roles in numerous Vancouver-shot films, MOWs, and TV series, and in theatre he was worked for nearly every major company in Western Canada.
Daniel also won the National Screen Institute Drama Prize to make a 35mm short film 'The Janitors (2006)', which he co-wrote/directed with Matthew Kowalchuk), starring William B. Davis and Medina Hahn, mentored by Jason Margolis and Daniel Petrie Jr.. 'The Janitors (2006)' screened at numerous Canadian and international festivals (including Vancouver International Film Festival and the Hollywood Film Festival), was broadcast on CBC's Canadian Reflections, and attained world wide distribution from interfilm Berlin.
Daniel was born in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, and moved to Edmonton, Alberta when he was 5. He starred in his first professional theatre production at the age of 12, and continued to act and write through his teenage years, graduating with Honors & the Golden Key from the University of Alberta's BFA Conservatory Acting Program. He currently lives in Vancouver.
