Christopher Morley was born in Haverford, Pennsylvania in 1890. His father was a mathematics professor at Haverford College. As a child Morley was a dedicated bookworm. He was graduated from Haverford and won a Rhodes scholarship which enabled him to attend New College, Oxford. While there he published his first book, a volume of poems. He returned to the States; in 1913 he began work at Doubleday. His first novel, "Parnassus on Wheels", essentially a story about a bookmobile -- the first one -- was a success on both sides of the Atlantic, and he followed it with "The Haunted Bookshop".
