He got his show business start at the age of two in 1944 in the Broadway play "A Member of the Wedding". His performance caught the eye of MGM, which brought him to Hollywood in 1946. He appeared in several feature films for MGM over the next five years. His formal education was squeezed in between takes at MGM's studio school, where other child stars of the period like Elizabeth Taylor, Dean Stockwell, Debbie Reynolds and Tommy Rettig all learned together.
